Last summer I visited a most original place, somewhere in the middle of nowhere, in my hometown Zomergem (means more or less ‘summer town’). I wanted to make a story about it, but as time went by, after a while I thought it was too late to report on it. Too late, and gone anyway. Just as any good popup concept: there for a short while, leaving many behind, regretting never made it to the venue.
So when I heard that the ‘Volta Popcorn’ concept was having its second edition this summer, I decided it a perfect opportunity to bring the story anyway.
Volta Popcorn is exactly like you hope it to be. A contemporary restaurant, build in the middle of a cornfield, without any compromise.
Tents are custom made and set up in the corn, a small path is build trough the field, and some sanitary facilities are provided. The chefs are installed in the corn as well, and serve the guests who are sitting side by side along wooden tables and benches. Just one menu to keep service simple, but the 5 or six course diner or lunch is great. Good, memorable dishes, in a fabulous, poetic setting. Popcorn is served as desert with ice cream, besides other good natural food, well dressed and prepared in the field kitchen that is far from high tech. Respect for the team that works in sometimes very hot conditions (it is summer after all, with no airco off course) but also in heavy rains. The night before we went last year the entire staff had to work in rubber boots, because of a mud stream caused by falling rain had entered the kitchen area.
That’s rock n’roll and we like it!
Just go there, before it’s too late again. And good to know: as a nice new feature, 5 extra tents are set up for a glamorous night sleep in the corn, after a magical night with friends in this wonderful place.
