DesertX Alua_Image of the day #25

The Arabic world tries to embrace the international art world by providing them a golden ticket an exclusive venues to install them in the region. After the magnificent satellite Louvre museum in Abu D’Abi (I was lucky to visit it at the day of the opening in 2019), we now had Desert X Alula. You might know the original Desert X, a site-specific, contemporary art exhibition, held in the Coachella Valley in Southern California for the first time organised in February 2017 with more than 200.000 people visiting the art festival.   The idea behind Desert X is to produce international contemporary art exhibitions that activate dessert locations through site-specific and temporary installations by acclaimed international artists that address ecological, cultural, spiritual and other themes The recent Desert X Alula took place in the desert of Alula, an ancient oasis in Saudi Arabia last year and was a cross-cultural dialogue between artists from Saudi Arabia and its surrounding region and artists from previous iterations of Desert X in California, taking its cues from the extraordinary landscape and historical significance of Alula. And, nice to know, it’s free. Hereby my favourite art installation of this …

The Tourist_Image of the day #24

This image-of-the-day I shot during a visit at the very strong expo Robotlove during the Dutch Design Week. It catches by attention by it’s beauty, it’s innocence and it’s possibility. The figure is called ‘The Tourist’ and is the work of Dutch artist Margriet van Breevoort. She uses her hyperrealistic sculptures to seduce the viewer to believe in something impossible. The Tourist is the reminiscent of a traveler from a distant world, lost in the here and now. The figure seems to be amazed at the grand and complex world in which we live today. Where does the tourist come from and to what world does she belong? In the light of what is possible today, The Tourist is a reflection of a impending reality. Another work at from the same artist, shown at Robotlove is The Waiting, a humanoid walrus waiting quietly on a bench. The sculpture makes us wonder: what is normal in the world with endless possibilities? Intriguing no? Much more to come on Robotlove and the Dutch Design Week in the next …

Rick Owens_Image of the day #23

I love the work of Rick Owens. Rick’s clothing lines, fashion shows and furniture collections are always bold statements, very pure and have a provocative nature. So does his shops, temples of Owens pure and black philosophy. They all have one eye catcher in common: in every shop you have a life size wax version of Rick Owens. In Paris it’s standing on the counter desk and nearly every hardcore fan takes a picture with their idol, standing on the desk. But in Owens Milan store Rick’s wax figure is not visible in the store. You have to go into one of the two fitting rooms to see them. Did I already tell you Owens has a fine sense of humor and certainly a huge dose of self relativity? You have to see the image to believe the position he’s in… Besides the particular fitting room seats, the Rick Owens store is, as always, very minimal designed, and the entire shop is pure white in a concrete bunker. No window displays, the windows are closed with a white concrete …

POP by Stella McCartney

POP by Stella McCartney. Image of the day #21

A new concept for a new upcoming target group: POP by Stella McCartney is the scent for the new generation of Stella girls; independent but strengthened by their togetherness. It is an adventure, a spirit. It is about capturing the moment when you find yourself and come into your own. The story continues in the campaign film shot by Melina Matsoukas. Indie pop musician Grimes, Lola Leon (the daughter of Madonna), black rights activist and Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg and animal rights focused model Kenya Kinski-Jones trail blaze on a journey of discovery in the California dessert. POP by Stella McCartney is for a new group of girl power with a ‘let’s do this’ attitude, rooted in authenticity, friendship and individuality. Promoting self-acceptance and positive mutual support, the campaign offers a refreshing alternative to the occasionally divisive atmosphere of body shaming and the unfiltered opinion-sharing that currently exists on social media. According to McCartney, each one arrived on set with her own distinctive beauty signature, from Grimes’s Rainbow Brite dye job and Stenberg’s cloud of curls to Leon’s extended-tip French manicure …
