Huel up your body!

Being professionaly focusing on food trends and all kind of food related innovations, sometimes you discover a new kind of food product that asks further investigation. Let me introduce Huel, a brand new food replacement in the market. I was in London when the team behind Huel give me some samples of their product: a white attractive, ûber neutral pouch, very low but strong branding in a black Helvetica typo and  the product itself has a velvety powder-ish feeling.     What is this Huel hype all about? Well, Huel is a nutritionally complete powdered food that contains all the proteins, carbs, and fats you need, plus at least 100% of the European Union’s “Daily Recommended Amounts” of all 26 essential vitamins and minerals . It’s been formulated by a renowned nutrition expert James Collier who has 25 years of experience working in nutrition and dietetics, so not a rookie would I think. Huel is 100% vegan (better for the environment and animals), super convenient, high in protein (148g per 2000 calories) and fibre (35g), contains just 4.6 grams of sugar per 2000 calories (no …

Burp, a food magazine, but not as we know it

I am HUGE magazine freak. Every new magazine that comes on the market I end up buying, one day or another. Every fashion, food, lifestyle related magazine I lay my hands on ends up on my Moooi magazine collectors plank, until a brand-new shipment is delivered. So it was no surprise I got invited by press agent Saskia from The Wicked PR to check out BURP, a new mini food magazine by pastry chef Erik Vernieuwe and photographer Kris De Smedt. God, what a surprise it was to see the first edition of this tiny, not-glossy-at-all microzine with styled food photography! Bye bye natural food sets, chaotic arranged food ingredients, crumbles and used wooden surfaces. Erik and Kris do not like the ’so-hip-it-hurts’ Instagram foodie-style. Burp food magazine re-invented the glam-style, über worked, glossed over the top food styling, inspired by the 80 ties. Think bright color back grounds, clean cut custom photography and bizar designed recipe lay outs. No advertising, articles, interviews or other clutter to distract, bore or seduce the reader. Burp is a look-and-enjoy …

Hillary Clinton president

Hillary for president, it’s about time!

Normally I don’t do politics on the Squid Stories blog. But today I have a feeling, 2 days before the most important election day in the U.S, I can not stand here and not speak up. The Squid Stories reports on contemporary culture and never before the U.S. presidency election was  a more accurate reflection on what is happening in the world today. Let’s face it, we are 2 days away from a (possible) world historical day: the day that for the first time a woman is elected President of the United States. But instead of people celebrating for this memorable hole in the bullet proof glass roof of power, we never witnessed a more ridicule battle between two candidates who could not be more wrong for each other. About Donald we can be brief: he is not suited to lead one of the biggest powers in the world. Point. But why is the choice so hard? Why are we still worried in Europe (and the rest of the world) that Hillary might not win next week? Yes, …

Toast ale beer

Toast ale, bread waste beer

Toast Ale made entirely from surplus bread that would otherwise by thrown away by bakeries, delicatessens and supermarkets is the brainchild of Tristram Stuart – who has linked up with Hackney Brewery to produce the new ale. Stuart hopes Toast ale will help to offset the 24m slices of bread currently thrown away every day by UK households. According to official UK figures, every year about 15m tonnes of food is wasted. At home and in the commercial sector bread is the most wasted food item.
