Crossroads by Bruce Conner. Image of the day #18

Opening this weekend at MOMA is a major monographic museum exhibition of works by Bruce Conner. ‘It’s All True’ surveys the late artist’s 50-year career with over 250 objects from film to painting to performance. One of the foremost American artists of the postwar era, Conner touched on various themes of American society following WWII, from the rising consumer culture to the dread of nuclear apocalypse. It’s because of this legendary picture that Conner made it to “Image of the day”. The film still from CROSSROADS (1976) comes from a daring film in which Conner epitomizes the horror and fascination with nuclear bombs, as well as with the capacity of art and cinema to create a powerful record of death and destruction on an unimaginable scale. For their structural innovation and daring subject matter, films like A MOVIE (1958) and CROSSROADS (1976) have become landmarks of American experimental cinema. Connor’s exhibition runs from this Sunday July 3 2016 until October 2.

I first saw the drawings of this project and when later images of the nearly finished work appeared, you felt it straight away: this project was going to be world news. I’m talking about The Floating Piers, the astonishing temporary art installation of Bulgarian 81 year old artist Christo. The project consist of three saffron paths that link Monte Isola to the mainland, and a smaller island called San Paolo to Monte Isola. The Floating Piers parcours is 16 metres wide and 5.5 kilometres long. Technicaly it is a titan’s work: 100,000 square meters of shimmering yellow fabric, carried by a modular floating dock system of 220,000 high-density polyethylene cubes, undulate with the movement of the waves as The Floating Piers rise just above the surface of the water. © Instagram The Floating Piers Over the next 16 days, 40,000 visitors are expected to walk The Floating Piers. Banksy’s Dismaland, a fabulous stunt art show. PART 2.

Many pieces are sharp critiques on modern amusement. Banksy’s whale jumping trough a ring in a toilet was inspired by Sea World that was ripped apart by the 2013 documentary “Blackfish.” Or Cinderella’s crashed carnage inside her grungy dark castle, surrounded by flashing paparazzi with motorbikes. When you leave the ‘scene’, you can buy your own souvenir photograph for 5 pound. (“Terribly expensive”, as the staff comments without asking.) Another central spot is the Jeffrey Archer Memorial Fire Pit where visitors can warm themselves around a daily burning of the local lord’s books. There is Ben Long’s sculpture of a horse constructed from scaffolding (a piece that was shown in the V&A). I loved Banksy’s model boat pond with overly crowded boats packed with asylum seekers you can operate yourself from the side with a (paying) remote controller. The moment I got the news that Banksy was about to open an entertainment park, (one that is not) near his hometown Bristol, I knew that I wanted to be there. With any means. But as expected, we were not alone. From the first second the website was online, he crashed, due to 6 million hits from all over the world. You would crash for less, no? Our planning began, as we decided to take the car, get on the Eurotunnel, a car-train under the channel, to drive another 3 hours to this weird little coast village, called Weston-Super-Mare. (Very cool name by the way.) The quest for tickets started. (A Banksy show at Bristol city museum in 2009 attracted more than 300,000 visitors over 12 weeks, so we knew it was not going to be easy to get in). One week after the opening week, the site was back on line and the hunt kicked off. 3 hours later, we had 4 most desired tickets for an evening session, and the day after, 4 …
