Bar Luce at Fondazione Prada_Milan

Each year we head to Milan for ‘Il Salone del Mobile’. Besides a shit load of design, great food and interesting talks we always visit the wonderful Fondazione Prada.  Always , really always there are good & surprising expo’s to discover while strolling around in-between the buildings and posing in front of the shiny gold leaf wall. Rem Koolhaas, of OMA, was the star architect working together with Miuccia Prada on this special project. Bar Luce Milan But the most important place to visit is the magical, unique pastel painted Bar Luce. Don’t be mistaken: this is not an evening bar but a breakfast/lunch & apero venue straight from the world of Mary Poppins. To set things right straight away: this is not a fairytale but a creation by cineast & movie director Wes Anderson, famous for movies like The Grand Budapest Hotel and my fav The Royal Tenenbaums. Imagine: color-blocked Formica tables, whimsical wallpaper, a perfectly modish WC, and there’s even a Steve Zissou–themed pinball machine. In the counter & bar only very Italian drinks_think campari, espresso …

Leek paper food waste innovation_DDW 2017

Thé themes of this Dutch Design Week was definitely waste management, but even more trying to make new, innovative materials out of it. This Leek paper food waste innovation is one of them. This initiative I spotted at the Embassy of Food. What is this about? Well, meet Jan Van Lierop, the largest organic vegetable grower in the Netherlands. He exports most of his produce and he is legally obligated to deliver his leaks in packaging. But today we all try to have less packaging and preferably biodegradable… The question popped up: What if his company were able to use the waste flow from the leaks to make a wrapper? That is what Belgian (based in Rotterdam) designer Isaac Monté came in. He started to experiment with leak pulp, as you do with wood pulp to make paper. The result of his experiments were quite impressive. Interesting printable leak paper, all different texturewise because of the many greens and fibers in the waste pulp. The leak paper did not smell funny, had a beautiful look and …

Algae bar_DDW 2017

The Algae Bar is an interactieve installation by the guys behind Cateringa & kompanen. The idea is the attach yourself to the life cycle of the algae. Algae are considered one of the new food components for man & animal in the future. The bar is an tempt to close that circle. Visitors of the Embassy of Food at the DDW 17 in Eindhoven donate their time and breath to the algae, while they lie on a bed underneath a set up of different algae samples, while to listening to an essay of waterline or just listen to their own breathing. What we breath out contains warmth and CO2, what are valuable resources for young algae. The algae on their turn, produce oxygen, but on itself they are a rich source  of proteïne, vitamines en minerals. In the future algae will be used a animal & human food but also as bio fuel. I found this such a great story, that I had to try it out. I donated 15 minutes of time, warmth and …

The Embassy of food_DDW 2017

Last week Eindhoven was buzzing for the legendary Dutch Design Week. Each year we take some time to visit the most interesting designers & projects that showed their vision on the future. A must visit was this year’s Embassy of food, a meeting place for designers, dreamers, food professionals, and the public to learn more and work on tackling pressing food issues. The entire week TEOF organized a series of activities, like the Food Heroes project, keynotes and workshops and curated by eating designer Marije Vogelzang, a designer who leads the food design department at Design Academy Eindhoven. The exhibition offers an insight into how food will be grown, processed, transport, and eaten in the future, and how farming systems could change as a result of food scarcity and new technologies. The Embassy of Food created a few radical views on future issues that visitors were be able to experience and taste. In the following post, I will highlight some interesting food-design concepts on show at the Embassy of Food. Concepts and thoughts about what we might consume in years …
