I must admit it, I’ve always liked Carine.
Oui, La Roitfeld as she probably was called in Paris when she worked there as Vogue’s fashion editor.
But I spotted her long before that. As a young stylist for Elle, and later in partnership with the young Mario Testino. A match made in heaven and when a third star in the making, Mister Tom Ford himself, joined the hip entourage they could go wild. So they did.
Ford and Roitfeld invented the wave in fashion photography called ‘Porn chic’ (Carine likes the label ‘Erotica Chic’ better) and Ford’s collections for Gucci were the perfect playground for their experiments. Remember model Carmen Kass pulling down her knickers and showing off body hair shaved into the letter ‘G’. Carine’s idea.

Published by Rizzoli. This fabulous 368-page tome looks back at the fashion stylist/editor/muse and her 30-year career.
I pre-ordered it more than a year ago if you want to know 🙂
But I wanted to sign you in on La Roitfeld’s make up collection for my ab fab brand for years MAC.
A collaboration that was meant to be, as Carine has more or less always the same style. Her clothes (designer black, black, black and some white), her out-of-bed-je-ne-sais-quoi hairdo and without a doubt her makeup.
So, what else could and would she bring but a version of her own, strong recognisable signature look, sticking to the strict dress code of ‘black tie and dark, ‘nightlived’ smokey eyes?
Launched with a fun ‘making off video’ and a party in NY off course, we only could wait for the real stuff.
Last week released in (too) limited edition at Mac stores, a small but very to the point collection. I see it as thé perfect toolbox for a look à la Carine.
Nude nail polish, check. Pallet of mat or shiny black, browns and creme eyeshadows, check. Nude lipstick to blend away your mouth, check.
A must have eye lash curler, an eye brow pencil, mascara…
All in a beautiful mat packaging with Carine’s famous ‘CR’ signature.
