No blabla, but great design at Domus Plus Designblabla-a life inspiration day

Domus Plus Design Blabla

Same day (November 9th), entire different venue and vibe!

Right after the Big Air snowboard event, we hurried of from Antwerp to Roeselare (of all places!) to participate at 25 years Domus Plus.

Peter and Suzy, owners and visionairs behind this always surprising designwalhalla were once very much known for their legendary “theme-parc-like” parties ( I remember for instance, long before the mad cow decease, a exclusive white virus party where all guests were ‘desinfected’ and filmed during this process before entering the venue)

But this time no pure party celebration, but a design worthy anniversary full of information, designer encounters and new discoveries. They asked some design ambassadors to invite the guests, in order to meet new potential clients, and let them enjoy this limited meet & greets. Alain Monnens (designer of lights and things), Kate Stockman (yep, me – Trend(r)evolutionary and force behind The Squidstories blog), Top of Mind (A head with ideas), Veerle Declercq (blogger forty styles), Veerle Windels (fashion journalist) and Wouter Castelein (Comma communication).

What about the event? First of all Domus Plus and it’s lab and art gallery Designblabla are hosted in a great, supersize store in which you really need to take time to wander around, not to miss all the carefully selected big & small design objects. For this special occasion, journalist and project coordinator Dieter Van Den Storm guided friends and guests trough Peter and Suzy’s design playground.

Nicola Galbiati, president of Italian Design Label Mogg came to Roeselare together with designer Carlo Bititti. They presented a strong, innovative pieces with intriguing storytelling roots. I instinctively selected the white round table where some pieces of wood were sliced off and the cut itself was repainted in the most vivid, electrifying neon yellow. Yes!

A young artist Sanne De Brabandere surprised us with poetic stories about her work: photographs and sculptures made out of traditional, nostalgic porcelain statues, “bisquit’ as we used to call them.

Typical ornaments you know from your grandma’s “dressoir”, nowadays more to be found in garbage recycling parks. That’s exactly where De Brandere finds her raw material, most of the time broken and this means for her more beautiful and emotional. She works with broken statues or she breaks them up herself to create new stories, like the two pieces she call’s “a broken marriage”.

Yours truly seated in a MMM lounge sofa, enjoying Veerle Windels intro on Maison Martin Margiela home collection. Veerle had some juicy details on the man himself when she interviewed him when he still was involved with his own label.
